Best Route To Travel Leh Ladakh By Road
1. Manali To Leh Via Baralacha La
This route is very famous among bikers, but you need to know the road conditions before heading to Leh. as this route is generally remains closed in winters due to heavy snowfalls. The opening date for this route is not fixed and depends on the amount of snowfall this winter. However, it generally opens around mid-May (but for a safer side you can plan your journey from June onwards).
Road Condition:
- Eighty percent of the roads are very good with proper asphalt but twenty percent are off roading and bumpy.
Challenges:
- In very short, Sarchu is a nightmare. Avoid staying overnight in Sarchu if possible. No oxygen, no medical facility and very bad wind.
2. Manali To Leh Via Shinku La
Newly opened and very beautiful route for an epic ride. Fresh air, virgin mountains including god of mountains Gumbok Rangan. A lovely ride and a wonderful experience for sure. This route remains closed during winters due to snowfall. It would be wise to head toward Leh only after confirming the route condition.
Road Condition:
- Eighty percent of the roads have proper asphalt and are very good, but twenty percent are off-road and bumpy. But trust us it will be an alluring ride you will ever opt for.
Challenges:
- There is no such challenge on this route. However, you just need to prepare for basic facilities at the enroute stays and keep in mind there are no garages, and most of the time you will not have mobile network service.
3. Srinagar To Leh Via Zoji La
National Highway 1. Yes, its a NH1. It's an approximately 450 km stretch from Srinagar to Leh and road is well managed and in very good condition, similar to those in metro cities. More than 95% of the route is paved with asphalt. Bewitching road with natural scenary surrounded by mountains and other side rivers. This route includes multiple passes and the main pass is Zoji La which remains closed during winters.
Road Condition:
- Almost the entire route is paved with asphalt.
Challenges:
- No serious challenges in this route. Just need to be prepared for multiple passes that come during this route. If possible, avoid driving on high passes at night.
