Pure Veg restaurants serve vegetarian food only, so there is no worry about the same kitchen being used for meat. These are the best choice for strict vegetarians and Jain travellers, in cities such as Hanoi, Sapa, Ninh Binh, Da Nang, Hoi An, Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh City.

Indian Restaurant listings serve Indian cuisine and are not marked pure veg. Many offer a full vegetarian menu, but if your dietary rules are strict, ask about how the food is prepared before ordering.

TIPS FOR INDIAN VEGETARIAN TRAVELLERS IN VIETNAM

1. Check timings before you go. Many restaurants close between lunch and dinner, and hours can change during holidays and Tet.

2. Book ahead for groups. Larger groups should inform the restaurant in advance, so food is ready on time.

3. Mention Jain or no onion-garlic needs clearly. Not every kitchen is set up for it, so ask early.

4. Plan meals around sightseeing. Places like Sapa, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha and Mekong day trips are spread out, so pre-plan your lunch stop.

5. Keep a backup. Vietnamese vegetarian eateries, often marked as "chay", are a good fallback and serve Buddhist-style vegetarian dishes.

6. Carry snacks for long road transfers and early-morning departures.
