Statue Of Unity Complete Information
Some monuments you admire from a distance. The Statue of Unity is one you feel. Standing on a river island in the Narmada, it rises 182 metres above the landscape, and the first time you see it from the approach road, you will probably do what most visitors do: slow down, stare, and reach for your phone.
It is the tallest statue in the world, and it is only a short journey from Ahmedabad. This guide covers what the statue is, why it matters, what you can see around it, how to plan your visit and when to go.
What is the statue of Unity?
The Statue of Unity is a monumental tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the key leaders of India's freedom movement and the country's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. It stands at 182 metres, making it the tallest statue in the world, and is located in Ekta Nagar (earlier known as Kevadia) in the Narmada district of Gujarat, near the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
The statue was built in about 33 months and inaugurated on 31 October 2018, the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. The date is now observed every year as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day).
Why is it so special?
Sardar Patel is remembered for his role in bringing together more than five hundred princely states into one united India after independence. That is the idea behind the name: unity. The statue is meant to honour that effort and inspire the same spirit in the generations that visit.
For travellers, it is special for a few reasons:
- Scale. Few structures anywhere can match the sheer size of the statue, and photographs do not prepare you for it.
- The setting. It stands on the Narmada, with the Sardar Sarovar Dam, and the Vindhya and Satpura ranges around it.
- More than a statue. The complex has a museum, gardens, viewpoints and activities, so it works for a full day or even a weekend.
- Easy access from Gujarat's cities, which makes it a good short getaway.
What to see and do at the statue of unity
1. The statue and the base area
Walk up to the base to take in the full height of the statue. The memorial garden and the artificial lake in front make for good photographs, especially in the softer light of morning and late afternoon.
2. The exhibition gallery and museum
At the base, you will find an exhibition and audio-visual gallery that tells the story of Sardar Patel's life, his role in India's history and the making of the statue.
3. The viewing gallery
This is the main draw for many visitors. A high-speed lift takes you up to a viewing gallery at around 153 metres, roughly at chest level of the statue. From here you can look out over the Sardar Sarovar Dam, the Narmada and the surrounding Vindhya and Satpura hills. Weekends and holidays can be busy, so plan your slot early.
4. Valley of Flowers
A landscaped garden area with seasonal flowers, popular for a relaxed walk and family photographs.
5. Sardar Sarovar Dam viewpoint
One of India's best-known dams sits nearby, and the viewpoint helps you appreciate the scale of the river and the project.
6. Evening attractions
The projection mapping show and the lighting around the complex give the evening its own charm. Show timings can change, so check at the venue or the official portal.
7. Gardens and family attractions
The area also has the Unity Glow Garden, a maze garden, cactus and butterfly gardens and the Sardar Patel Zoological Park, which are handy additions if you are travelling with children.
8. Activities around Ekta Nagar
Depending on the season and availability, visitors also enjoy the jungle safari, river cruises on the Narmada, the Narmada aarti and other attractions in the Ekta Nagar area.

- 31 October: Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, when special programmes are held at Ekta Nagar. It is a memorable day to visit, but also the busiest, so book ahead and expect restrictions.
- Monsoon (July to September): The landscape turns green and beautiful, but rain can interrupt outdoor activities.
- Summer (April to June): Hot and tiring, especially in the middle of the day. If you must visit, go early in the morning.
A weekday visit is usually calmer than a weekend. Do note that the statue complex has traditionally been closed one day a week, commonly Monday, so check the official calendar before you leave.
