What is a self-drive expedition?

You drive your own vehicle from Delhi to Ladakh, with our team providing route planning, permits, stays and support. It gives you the freedom of a Leh Ladakh bike trip with the convenience of organised support.

Do I need prior experience in mountain driving?

Yes, some experience is recommended, as roads have sharp turns, steep gradients and unpaved sections. Confident, careful drivers do best, especially during a Leh Ladakh group tour.

What documents do I need?

Your valid driving licence, vehicle registration papers, insurance and ID proof are required when travelling to Leh Ladakh.

Is a support vehicle or guide with us?

Yes, typically a lead or sweep vehicle accompanies the group, with a mechanic to assist.

What happens if my vehicle breaks down?

Our team helps arrange repairs or towing where possible. Costs may vary, so check the terms before booking Ladakh tour packages.

Are permits arranged for us?

Yes, Inner Line Permits are arranged for the destinations covered for Indian nationals. We need your vehicle and ID details in advance when arranging Leh Ladakh tour packages.

Which vehicles are best for this trip?

High-clearance vehicles such as SUVs are best. Make sure your vehicle is serviced and has good tyres, especially if planning a Leh Ladakh trip from Delhi.

What's the best time for a self-drive trip?

June to September, when the passes are open and roads are in their best condition. This is generally a suitable period for planning a Leh Ladakh tour package from Delhi.

Who This Trip Is For

Confident drivers who love long mountain roads. If you enjoy winding passes, changing terrain and being in control of the journey, this trip is made for you.
Road-trip lovers who want more than just the drive. You want the freedom of your own car and the depth of local experiences in the same trip.
Couples, friends and families travelling together. You get a private, flexible trip in your own vehicle, with shared moments at the dunes, the lake and around the bonfire.
Travellers who value privacy and flexibility. You don’t depend on a group vehicle, so you can pause for photographs, take extra time at a place you love or start a little later.
Return Ladakh visitors who want a deeper trip. You’ve seen the main sights before and now want to experience the culture, food and villages.
Drivers with some high-altitude or hill driving experience. Comfort with narrow roads, steep climbs and changing conditions makes the trip far more enjoyable.

Note: This trip is not recommended for first-time hill drivers or anyone uncomfortable with long drives on rough mountain roads. If that’s you, ask us about our chauffeur-driven version.

Health & Safety Protocol

Acclimatization And Safety

Your safety and well-being are paramount. Please review these health guidelines and acclimatization protocols thoroughly before departure.

Comfortable, hygienic stays throughout the trip. Clean rooms and proper rest each night, so you can start every day refreshed.
A mix of hotels and local stays. Each is chosen for its character and its closeness to the experience, not just as a place to sleep.
Simple, cosy comfort in remote areas. In high-altitude and remote places, expect comfortable stays with a local feel rather than luxury.
A rest day before the high-altitude drive. Your first day is kept free, so your body adjusts before you head higher.
A gradual climb in altitude. The route is planned so you gain height slowly, which reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
Clear daily route plans. Every day comes with realistic driving times, recommended stops and a safe arrival window.
A trip host you can reach. Our team can guide you on weather, road conditions and route changes.
Permits arranged in advance. We handle the required permits so you can focus on the road.
A flexible plan. If weather or road conditions change, we adjust the itinerary instead of pushing you to stick to it.
Share your health details early. If you have heart, lung, blood pressure or altitude-related concerns, tell us before the trip and consult your doctor.

Traveler Insights & Tips

Helpful Guides

Agree on a lead and a closing vehicle. One car sets the route and one stays at the back, so no one is left behind.
Let the slowest driver set the pace. Mountain driving is not a race, and a relaxed group is a safe group.
Keep a safe distance between cars. Don’t tailgate, especially on gravel, in dust or on descents.
Fix regrouping points. Agree on a few stops during the day where everyone meets, rests and checks in.
If you get separated, stop at the next safe spot and wait. Never speed up to catch up.
Share live locations and download offline maps. Mobile network is patchy, so don’t rely on it alone. Walkie-talkies help if you have them.
Share the driving where you can. Rotating drivers reduces fatigue on long days.
Go slow and stay in control. Speed matters far less than steady, careful driving on narrow, winding roads.
Give way to uphill traffic and army convoys. Pull over safely and give them space.
Use a lower gear on descents. Engine braking protects your brakes from overheating. Avoid riding the brakes or the clutch.
Sound the horn before blind turns. A short honk lets oncoming vehicles know you’re there.
Don’t overtake on curves or narrow stretches. If in doubt, wait.
Stay alert for landslides and falling stones. Don’t stop under overhanging rocks or on loose slopes.
Cross water carefully. Check the depth first, drive slowly and steadily, and don’t stop midstream.
Avoid driving after dark. Visibility, temperature and road conditions can change quickly. Start early and aim to reach your stay before sunset.
Take a break every two hours. Fatigue builds faster at high altitude, so stretch, hydrate and rest.
Keep water and light snacks in the car. Dehydration affects concentration as well as health.
Never drive with altitude sickness symptoms. Headache, dizziness, nausea or unusual drowsiness mean it’s time to stop, rest and tell your group and our team.
Expect your car to feel less powerful. Thinner air reduces engine performance, so give yourself extra time on climbs.
Check tyres, brakes and fuel before each long stretch. Fuel stops are limited, so top up whenever you can.
Carry the essentials. A spare tyre, a puncture repair kit, basic tools, a first aid kit and a torch are worth having on board.
Keep your documents handy. That includes your driving licence, car registration, insurance and permit copies.
Carry cash. ATMs are limited outside the main town.
