What should I expect at Horton Plains and World's End?

Horton Plains is a high-altitude plateau of grassland and cloud forest, and World's End is a sheer cliff with huge views over the valley below. Reaching the viewpoint involves a walking trail of several kilometres, so wear sturdy shoes and carry water. Views are usually clearest in the early morning, before clouds and mist roll in, which is why this day starts early. The weather can change fast and it can be cold and windy, so keep a light rain jacket handy. Visibility cannot be guaranteed, as it depends on the weather on the day.

We spend two nights in Nuwara Eliya. How cold does it get, and what should we pack?

Accepted Answer

Nuwara Eliya sits high in the hills, so evenings and early mornings are noticeably cool, and Horton Plains can be even colder and windier. Pack a warm jacket or sweater, a light rain jacket, closed shoes with a good grip and socks. The rest of the trip, in Kandy, Yala and Bentota, is warm and humid, so also carry light cotton clothes and swimwear. For temples, wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, and slip-on sandals make removing footwear easy.

Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka, and is it still free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you still need to apply, but there is no fee at the moment. From May 25, 2026, Sri Lanka waived the tourist visa fee for citizens of 40 countries, including India, and eligible travellers get a free 30-day tourist visa. The waiver does not remove the requirement: you must still get your ETA before you arrive. You apply online at the official portal, eta.gov.lk. If you want to stay longer than 30 days, you can apply for an extension, but the extension fee is payable. Rules can change, so check the official site again just before you book.

Is Sri Lanka safe for families, couples and women travelling in a group?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka is generally a comfortable and welcoming destination, and tourism is a major part of the economy. The usual travel sense applies. Keep valuables in the hotel safe, and avoid isolated beaches at night. Be careful with swimming, because many beaches have strong currents and not all of them have lifeguards. Agree on a price before getting into a tuk-tuk, or use a ride-hailing app. Be wary of strangers who say a famous attraction is "closed today" and offer to take you somewhere else. Travelling with a private driver, as in your package, removes most of these everyday hassles.

Will I find vegetarian and Indian-style food in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lankan food is rice-and-curry based, and many curries are made with lentils (dhal), jackfruit, pumpkin, beetroot or coconut, so vegetarians eat well. Hotels and restaurants on tourist routes also offer North Indian and South Indian dishes. Say "no meat, no fish, no egg" clearly when you order, because fish and dried fish are often used for flavouring. Jain travellers and anyone with strict food needs should tell the hotel and your tour operator before arrival.
